Dear UEFA, We Want Clean Football

I feel obliged to send you this e-mail in the light of the recent developments surrounding the match-fixing situation in Turkey. I am sure you are aware of the ongoing investigation that involves a number of football clubs, players, journalists and the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) officials that are being charged with match-fixing, extortion and threats. The evidence leaked to the press strongly suggests that the accused have been involved in match-fixing.

The current president of the TFF is a card carrying member and a major sponsor of Fenerbahce, one of the clubs accused of match-fixing. Additionally, the same president of the TFF has publicly announced that the crimes that are investigated should be regarded as personal and that the clubs involved should not be deemed responsible for the individuals’ actions and therefore should not be punished.

This is an outcry for help so I can watch real “football”; games where the players give it their all. I do not want to watch games that have been fixed. I do not want to buy season tickets for a league where the champion is determined by anything but the players’ performance.
It is important to note that;

1. Anyone or any clubs who are involved in all of this, should be punished for their crimes according to the UEFA and FIFA disciplinary codes; regardless of their club affiliations or stature.

2. Releasing the clubs from the responsibility of their officials’ conducts, not only means a breach of the Article 6 paragraph 1 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, but will henceforth grant clubs immunity from prosecution on any future match-fixing allegetions; further encouraging this and other kinds of illegal acts, hence severely damaging the integrity of the sport.

3. Waiting for the verdict of the Criminal Court would result in the subjugation of TFF’s disciplinary authority to the Criminal Court, hence would breach and further jeopardize the autonomy of the TFF and its judiciary mechanisms.

4. Postponing the justice is going to cause more injustice, turmoil and will undoubtedly hurt football as a whole.

5. Football’s governing bodies FIFA, UEFA and EU’s Commission on Sports should step in and make sure that the justice is served. Your pressure will ensure the fairness and swiftness of the process.

We want clean football. Please protect the game… and let us enjoy the game for what it is.

Sincerely,
